Explosive Revelation by ED: Karti Transferred 1.8 Crore Rs to his father P Chidambaram?

Trouble seems to be mounting for former Union finance minister P Chidambaram’s son, Karti Chidambaram. A report claimed on Monday that as part of its probe into the alleged money laundering case, the Enforcement Directorate has found evidence that Karti transferred Rs 1.8 crore into the bank account of a leading political figure. The Times of India reported that Karti transferred the money into the politician’s account from his bank account maintained with the Royal Bank of Scotland’s (RBS) Chennai branch.

While the ED sources refused to divulge the name of the politician to the newspaper, they did say that the neta has been in politics for decades and has held key responsibilities at the Centre.

Karti was arrested by the Central Bureau of Investigation from Chennai airport on the morning of on February 28, in connection with its probe into the INX Media case also involving then promoters Peter and Indrani Mukerjea.

Describing the discovery of the transfer of money as a key point in the investigation, ED sources said they are mulling over summoning the political figure. The report said the money was transferred in five installments between January 16, 2006, and September 23, 2009. The transaction hints there might have been a possible nexus between Karti and the political figure, ED sources said.

During questioning by the ED under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, admissible as evidence in court, then INX Media promoters Peter and Indrani Mukerjea has said that around $700,000 (Rs 3.1 crore) was paid to Karti via his companies situated abroad and linked to him. The money, the Mukerjeas revealed, was paid as a quid pro quo for clearance from the Foreign Investment Promotion Board (FIPB) for foreign investments in their TV venture INX Media. When the clearance was granted, the FIPB used to operate under the Ministry of Finance and it was then headed by P Chidambaram.
