Exposing the Double Standard of Liberal Media on Separate Dishes for Non-Veg Students Controversy

By  |

For a while now, liberals in India have been taking the higher moral ground when it comes to discourses on values of equality, justice and liberty, damning any and every one who fails to meet their righteous standards.

And while popular belief associates fundamentalism with right-wing idealists, lately the trends have reversed.

2 Days Back

A DAY after an email sent by the hostel council of a hostel at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Bombay, “requesting” non-vegetarians to use separate dishes caused a storm on social media, the council has sent a fresh mail saying no such “imposition” will be made. While it is a common practice in the IIT-B hostels to serve a common meal in a plate or tray, and any extra items including non-vegetarian and vegetarian dishes in an extra bowl, the mess team of Hostel 11 sent an email to residents last week urging non-vegetarians to eat in plates “meant specifically for non-veg dishes”. The email faced a backlash from residents on social media with students calling it “purity-pollution concern”.

However, on Tuesday, the general secretary of Hostel 11, Ritika Verma, clarified in an email: “This thing has been practised since a long time, that mess people are serving non-veg in different plates as they are not part of the main menu. We concern religious belief but as council members nothing of such kind can be forced upon anyone (sic).”

But Here what an Liberal Indian Media House did way back in 2014 which interestingly was not raised by many in past nor today.

The Chennai-based news organisation The Hindu known for its fire brand journalism and the left liberal views they judge others by. Often, through their elaborate writing and lengthy editorials, they have condemned those who do not abide by their progressive standards.

However, when it came to applying the same values within their organisation, the prolific news house fell short. In an alleged advisory issued to their employees, The Hindu has forbidden his employees from “bringing non-vegetarian food” in their canteen.

A copy of this supposed notice, that has gone viral across social media, informs that the said rule is, in fact, not a new addition, rather an already existing ‘rule’. It unabashedly explains the reason, stating, “All are aware non-veg food is not permitted in our Canteen premises as it causes discomfort to the majority of the employees who are vegetarian.”
