Karnataka Elections 2018: Postcard owner Mahesh Hegde’s Arrested,BJP Takes on Karnataka Govt

By  |

A massive controversy has broken out in Karnataka following the arrest of Mahesh Hegde, owner of a website called Postcard.news, by the Karnataka police on Thursday for allegedly posting ‘fake news’ of a communal nature.

The specific ‘fake news’ in question involves Postcard.news and Hegde allegedly posting a photo of a Jain monk and alleged that the monk had been attacked, with the identity of the attacker giving the matter a communal angle. “No one is safe in Siddaramaiah’s Karnataka”, Hegde had added in the post, which he allegedly shared on his as well as Postcard.news’ Twitter handles.

The BJP has termed the arrest politically motivated. Speaking to Republic TV, S Prakash, a Karnataka BJP leader said:

“Undoubtedly (It’s politically motivated). This is political vendetta. They’re unable to counter the facts he’s posting on the portal and they’re unable to face the criticism. And Congress’ Emergency mindset is back again. Taking advantage of the series of holidays Karnataka is enjoying they’ve arrested him so that he could not get bail for 4-5 days. They’re many more inflammatory and derogatory postings made by people who are close to the chief minister. Hundreds of complaints have been lodged against them. But no action taken.”

“We demand immediate release of Mahesh Hegde”, Prakash said.

The arrest has become a big talking point on social media, especially in the context of the crucial assembly elections that are due to take place in the state on May 12.
