Plot to Kill PM Modi: 1998 Serial blast Convict rearrested

By  |

The Coimbatore city police on Monday arrested Mohammed Rafiq — a convict in the 1998 Coimbatore bomb blast — in the wake of the emergence of a recorded audio of his telephonic conversation with a truck contractor in which he is allegedly heard saying he is planning to kill Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The alleged recorded telephonic conversation between Rafiq, a resident of Kunniyamuthur who has completed his jail term in connection with the 1998 bomb blast case, and Salem-based truck contractor Prakash was shared widely on social media sites.

In the eight-minute-long telephonic conversation, Rafiq is heard saying, “We have decided to kill Prime Minister Modi. We were the ones who planted bombs during (BJP leader) L K Advani’s visit to Coimbatore in 1998.”

Claiming that he had been to almost all prisons in Tamil Nadu, Rafiq is allegedly heard saying that he had been booked under the Goondas Act, Terrorist and Disruptive Activities (Prevention) Act (TADA) and the National Security Act.

The police, who came to know about the audio on Saturday, formed a special team to conduct an inquiry. “Investigations are going on,” said city police commissioner K Periaiah.

The police registered a case against him under sections 153 (A) (promoting enmity among different groups on grounds of religion) and 560 (i) (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
